WHAT is TASUC?
TASUC
- is the first public company which supports children with developmental disabilities
and their families in Japan.
- consists of experts of education for autistic children: Ukai Saito, President of the
company, used to be a chief researcher at the National Institute of Special Needs
Education, and many teachers at TASUC have careers as teachers of public
mainstream schools and schools of special education.
- questions the status of Japanese special education: it lacks of vertical and horizontal
relationships and cannot realize lifelong consistency.
- questions Japanese weak vocational support system after the compulsory education.
People with developmental disabilities are said to have a tendency to leave job
earlier than people without disability. They do not have chances and places to have
lifelong learning to obtain skills necessary to work. TASUC wants to help people
with developmental disabilities change their positions from receivers of charity to
tax payers.
- narrows the contents of what is taught to children with developmental disabilities.
Functionality precedes traditional items to teach. The essential skills to live
independently and compatible with other people, such as the skills of scheduling,
communicating, and task organization, are to be taught prior to anything.
- has developed an original assessment programme which is individually designed to
each child in order to fully understand his/her personality and characteristic. From
seven perspectives, an individualized educational programme is built up for him/
her.
- uses its original educational materials to educate children, step by step, in
accordance with the detailed instruction manual, which is the most valuable asset of
TASUC.
- helps parents who have children with developmental disabilities keep their mental
health by providing individual and/or group counseling (a.k.a. strength approach),
parent mentor system. It also encourages them to realize their own life.
- is involved in public assignments: Ukai Saito is an assigned school consultant in
Tokyo, and school supervisor in the city of Yokohama, as well as developing the
method of TASUC as a public company by holding workshops in the country.
- realizes supports with consistency and continuity by building up an organization of
vocational education, operating group homes, and advancing into the foreign
countries.
